About Free Text Counter

Free Text Counter is a simple online tool for checking the length and structure of text while you write, edit, or review a document. Paste an article, essay, social media caption, email, assignment, product description, or other text into the box and the statistics update automatically. You can see the total word count, character count, character count without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, and estimated reading and speaking time without pressing a separate count button.

Word and character limits are useful in many everyday tasks. Writers may need to meet an article length target, students may need to follow assignment requirements, and content creators may want to keep captions or descriptions concise. Character counts can also help when preparing short messages, titles, metadata, and form responses. The reading and speaking estimates are general guides based on average speeds, so actual time will vary depending on the reader, speaker, language, and text complexity.

How to Use Free Text Counter

  1. Click inside the text box and type your content, or paste text from another document.
  2. Review the statistics displayed beneath the text box. They refresh as your text changes.
  3. Use Words to check the number of words, Characters to include spaces and punctuation, and Characters (no spaces) to exclude whitespace.
  4. Check sentences, paragraphs, and lines to get a quick overview of the text structure.
  5. Click Clear Text when you want to remove the current text and start again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the word count update automatically?

Yes. The tool updates its statistics while you type, paste, or edit text. You do not need to click a count button.

What is the difference between characters and characters without spaces?

Characters includes letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, and line breaks. Characters (no spaces) excludes whitespace characters such as spaces, tabs, and line breaks.

How are sentences counted?

The counter estimates sentences by looking for common sentence-ending punctuation, including periods, exclamation marks, and question marks. Abbreviations and unusual formatting may affect the estimate.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time is an estimate based on an average reading speed of about 200 words per minute. Speaking time uses a slower average of about 130 words per minute. Your actual time may differ.

Is my text uploaded or saved?

This page counts text directly in your browser and does not send the text to a counting server. If the page is closed or refreshed, the text may be lost, so copy or save your writing elsewhere if you need to keep it.

Can I use this tool for school, work, and online content?

Yes. You can use it to check essays, reports, blog posts, captions, emails, descriptions, and many other kinds of text.
